Categories of PhD Programme
Fakir Mohan University offers the following two types of Ph.D. programme:
- a) Regular mode (Ph.D.)
- b) Executive mode (Executive Ph.D.)
Eligibility Criteria for FMU Balasore PhD Admission 2023
- A 2-year/ 4-semester master’s degree programme after a 3-year bachelor’s degree or a 1-year/ 2-semester master’s degree programme after a 4-year/ 8-semester bachelor’s degree programme or a programme or qualifications declared equivalent to the master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed. or equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of the educational institution.
- A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/ Differently-Abled, and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the UGC from time to time.
- Provided that a candidate seeking admission directly after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme should have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed. A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/ Differently-Abled, and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the UGC from time to time.

- The candidates have to apply online.

Selection Process
Admission into the Ph.D. programme shall be made using the following two level of tests (written Test and Viva-voce):
Level-I Test (Written test)
- FMU-RET category students: The candidates who have not qualified any national level tests (such as UGC-NET/ UGC- CSIR NET/ GATE and similar National level tests) must appear Fakir Mohan University Research Eligibility Test (FMU-RET). All candidates (except those have qualified national level tests, as mentioned in Exempted category) are required to appear Level-I Test.
- i. The Entrance Test (FMU-RET) syllabus shall consist of 50% of Research Methodology, and 50% shall be subject specific.
- ii. Students who have secured 50 % marks in RET are eligible to be called for the interview.
- iii. A relaxation of 5% marks will be allowed in RET for the candidates belonging to SC/ ST/ Differently-abled category, and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the UGC from time to time.
- Exempted category students: However, the candidates who have qualified in UGC-NET/ UGC- CSIR NET/ GATE and similar National level tests are exempted from FMU-RET are required to fill the online application form. Although FMU-RET is optional for these category of students (they may not opt for the FMU-RET while filling online application form), yet they must apply using the online application form and need to appear and qualify Level II examination on an interview for admission into Ph.D. programme.
Exam Details
Mode of the Examination: The written test and viva shall be conducted in Physical mode only.
Duration: 1.5 hours (90 minutes)
Medium of the Question Paper: The medium of the Question paper shall be in English only except the language subjects.
Subject and Syllabus of the Test: The RET subjects list for the session 2023-24 are given in the Information Bulletin. For Paper-II, the entrance syllabus is same as approved for the Post Graduate curriculum of Fakir Mohan University in the respective P.G. Department. The syllabus may be downloaded from the website of the respective department, Fakir Mohan University. The syllabus for Paper-I is same as the UGCNET syllabus, which may be downloaded from UGC website: https://www.ugcnetonline.in/syllabus-new.php.
The Validity of the RET Score: The FMU-RET (2023-24) score is valid for this admission notification only.
Pattern of Examination
Paper I:
- Marks: 35
- Number of Questions: 35
- Type: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
- Content: Covers teaching/research aptitude including reasoning ability, reading comprehension, divergent thinking, and general awareness.
- Note: All questions in Paper I are compulsory.
Paper II:
- Marks: 35
- Number of Questions: 35
- Type: Based on the subject selected by the candidate
- Content: Assesses knowledge in the selected subject domain.
Marking Scheme: Each question carries 01 (one) mark. There is no negative marking for incorrect answer. No marks will be allotted for question (s) un-answered by the candidates. If any question found incorrect/ambiguous or has multiple correct answers, only those candidates who have attempted the question and chosen one of the correct answers would be given the credit. If a question found to be incorrect (may be due to human or technical error) and the Question is dropped, then one mark shall be given to the candidates who have attempted the question.
Level-II Test (Interview)
The Level-II Test is mandatory for all the candidates who have qualified FMU RET as well as the candidates exempted from Level-I Test (written) and all required to qualify LevelII Test for getting enrolled into Ph.D. programme. The candidates who have qualified the Level-I test and those belonging to the Exempted category are eligible to appear Level-II Test.
- i. The concerned P. G. department of the University may decide the number of eligible students to be called for an interview based on the number of Ph. D. seats available (refer point 11 of this Bulletin).
- ii. While the selection of RET qualified candidates will be based on the performance in the entrance test and the interview/ viva-voce with a weightage of 70% for the entrance test and 30% for the performance in the interview/ viva-voce, selection of candidates who have qualified in UGCNET/ UGC- CSIR NET/ GATE and similar National level tests will be based on the performance in the interview/ viva-voce only.
- iii. A brief write-up providing a broad outline of the proposed research work which the Ph.D. scholar shall submit on the day of the interview to the concerned P.G. Department, FMU while the verification of the original documents.
