Goa University PhD Admission 2023-24 Eligibility Criteria

Admission to the Ph.D. Programmes for the September 2023 session is open to the following candidates:

  • (a) Candidates who have qualified in the Examinations of apex bodies such as CSIR-UGC/ UGC NET JRF/ lectureship, DBTJRF,SET/ SLET/JEST/ ICAR-NET examination of different Indian States/ GATE with a valid certificate, those having DST Inspire fellowship, or those awarded M.Phil. Degree as per the UGC guidelines. Students who have completed M. Phil Degree by distance mode are not eligible.
  • (b) All the candidates who are qualified in the Goa University Ph.D. Entrance Test (GU-PET) conducted by this University held in the month of August 2022 and August 2023.
  • (c) Senior Citizens who are otherwise qualified but exempted from appearing at the Ph.D. Entrance Test.

Eligibility Criteria

  • A candidate who has obtained a 1-year/2-Semester Master’s Degree Programme after a 4-year/8-Semester Bachelor’s Degree Programme or a 2-year/4-Semester Master’s Degree Programme after a 3-year Bachelor’s Degree Programme or qualifications declared equivalent to the Master’s Degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed or an equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of the educational institution.
  • Candidates who have completed the M.Phil. Programme with at least 55% mark in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed or equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of educational institutions, shall be eligible for admission to the PhD Programme
  • A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade shall be given for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (Non-Creamy Layer [NCL])/Person with Disability(PwD), Economically Weaker Section (EWS).
  • The subject of research shall be that which relates to the main branch/branches of knowledge chosen by the candidate for the Post-Graduate Degree. However, a candidate wishing to conduct research in a subject of an inter-disciplinary character shall also be eligible for registration. The applications of such candidates shall be considered by following the procedure set out under OA-40.2.

  • Candidates are required to apply on online on the GUMS Portal.
  • Please read the instructions and proceed for online application portal
  • Documents to be uploaded at the time of submitting the online application –
    • Statement of Marks of Post-Graduation
    • Valid Category Certificate (if applicable); OBC (non-creamy layer) Certificate is valid for 3 years.
    • EWS certificate (if applicable).
    • Certificate of Passing M.Phil. CSIR-UGC/UGC NET JRF/ lectureship, DBTJRF,SET/SLET/ JEST/ICAR-NET/ NET/SET/JRF/ GATE/GPAT/ GU-PET etc. Examinations.

Goa University PhD Admission Selection Process

Admission Process

  1. Candidates who qualify for the fellowship/scholarship in UGC-NET/UGC-CSIR NET/ GATE/CEED/GPAT and similar National level tests or any other test notified by the UGC from time to time, shall be eligible for admission to the PhD Programme based on an interview.
  2. Candidates not falling having qualification above (1) but have qualified NET/SET Lectureship shall be eligible for admission to the PhD Programme based on an interview. There shall be 70% weightage for the score at the NET/SET and 30% weightage for the Interview.
  3. Candidates not falling under (1 and 2) above shall have to answer the Entrance Test conducted at the University and those qualifying the test shall be eligible to attend the interview. There shall be 70% weightage for the score at Entrance Test and 30% weightage for the Interview. (For instance: If a student scores 120 marks in entrance test out 200 marks and 50 marks in interview out 100 marks, as per the above criteria the final marks out of 100 will be 120/200×0.7 + 50/100 x 0.3 = 57 marks)

Selection Process

While grading the candidates for admission to Ph.D. Programme, a weightage as mentioned above shall be followed depending upon the certificate category (JRF, NET/SET, GU-PET, etc).

  • a) The assessment for the interview shall be as per the following: i. Basic knowledge of the chosen field of study; ii. Competence for the proposed research;
  • b) The Selection Committee may provide a list of additional candidates as waitlisted candidates against a recognized Research Supervisor along with the reservation category. These candidates shall be listed under Category C and which shall be valid only for that particular round of admissions.
  • c) Senior Citizens who are otherwise qualified shall also be exempted from the PhD Entrance Test. Such candidates shall be eligible to appear for the interview in the concerned discipline. However, they shall not be issued an Equivalence Certificate at the time of award of PhD.
  • d) In case of a tie in scores, preference shall be given to those who have been awarded JRF in the CSIR-UGC/UGC NET/ GATE/CEED examination, followed by DST Inspire, M. Phil degree holders, NET, SET candidate and GPAT over GU-PET qualified candidates in that order. If the tie still persists then interview performance will be used as a tiebreaker.
  • e) Every candidate shall have to reside within the territorial jurisdiction of Goa University during the first three years of the period of research leading to PhD Degree.

Important Points

  • Candidates who have qualified at any of the National level Tests such as CSIR-UGC/UGC NET JRF/Lectureship/SET/SLET/JEST/ICAR-NET Examinations of different Indian States, GATE/GPAT with a valid Certificate. ARE NOT REQUIRED to apply for the GU-PET.
  • Regular M.Phil. Degree holders are also exempted from appearing at the GU-PET.
  • Candidates who have completed M.Phil. through distance mode are not exempted from answering the GU-PET.
  • Senior Citizens who are otherwise qualified shall also be exempted from appearing at the Ph.D. Entrance Test [GU-PET].
